NewsBeat BEACHWALK Sewer Pipe Installed By tunneling along the Ala Wai Canal, Frank Coluccio Construction says it has now installed nearly 6,000 feet of six-foot diameter sewer force main pipe for the “Beachwalk Wastewater Pump Station (WWPS) to Ala Moana Park” project. The project got under way in 2009 and is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2013. The Beachwalk WWPS came on the heels of the Ala Wai Canal sewage spill in 2006. “Now that the project is coming to a close, I realize just how unique a microtunneling project is compared to standard sewer construction,” says project engineer Jordan Bleasdale. “The challenges that are faced tests your ingenuity and imagination. Not all solutions to problems can be found at the local hardware store. “Research has played a key role in successfully completing this project. It is rewarding to be a part of such a remarkable undertaking.” The tunnel runs from Ala Moana Park to just behind Ala Wai Elementary School. At that point it connects to the existing twin tunnels that were installed in 2006 under the Ala Wai Canal out of Waikiki. The new force main was installed in five microtunnel drives, including the first double curve drive ever completed in North America. Two of the five drives crossed underneath the Ala Wai Canal. As the project nears completion more than a mile of temporary bypass piping installed in 2006 will be removed from the Ala Wai Canal. The new sewer line will carry the majority of sewage flows out of Waikiki.
