Architects Hawaii Strikes LEED Gold
The new FBI building in Kalaeloa, designed by Architects Hawaii, Ltd.,
has earned LEED® Gold Certification (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design).
Architects Hawaii, Ltd. (AHL)
has announced the Green Building
Certification Institute (GBCI) recently
awarded the new 152,000-square-foot
FBI building LEED® Gold Certification.
The FBI offices, formerly located on two
floors in downtown Honolulu's Federal
Building, are now in a four-story
building in Kalaeloa (previously part of
Barbers Point Naval Air Station).
"The project owner and the FBI
challenged us to deliver a state-of-theart high-performance facility," said
Architect David Bylund, LEED-AP,
principal and director for design and
sustainability at AHL. "Achieving LEED
Gold Certification was a large part of
that challenge. The benefits include
great reduction in energy and water use
compared to a standard office building,
and a very healthy work environment
for the FBI agents and staff."
As the designer of the new field
office, AHL worked with the project
developer, Penrose/Walsh FBI
Honolulu LLC, and the FBI to incorporate a variety of green strategies.
Free Electronic Waste Pickup Offered
Pacific Corporate Solutions (PCS),
in partnership with Sims Recycling
Solutions, is offering free electronics recycling and pickup service for all Oahu
businesses, nonprofit organizations,
educational institutions and government entities through December 31.
"Electronic waste is the fastestgrowing waste stream in the world
today with more than 2 million tons
ending up in landfills," said Lance
Furuyama, PCS vice president of operations. "Pacific Corporate Solutions is
committed to protecting our precious
environment by cutting the amount of
electronic waste sent to our landfills."
According to Furuyama, PCS
sends all recycled equipment to its
Halawa warehouse for sorting and
on-site destruction of hard drives. All
electronic waste is then packed and
shipped to Sims Recycling Solutions in
California, avoiding any addition to
Hawaii's landfills.
PCS will pick up desktop and
laptop computers, CPUs, servers, CRT
and LCD monitors, keyboards, mice,
scanners, routers, DVD players, VCRs,
telephones, PDAs, copiers/printers,
fax machines, MP3 players, speakers,
stereo equipment, digital and video
cameras, calculators, electronic
boards and cords/cables.
Furuyama said he hopes the free,
limited-time offer will encourage more
businesses, especially in downtown
Honolulu, to take advantage of the
easy, convenient service. In 2012, PCS
recycled about 725 tons-1.45 million
pounds-of electronics. Some of the
most popular items recycled were
computers, monitors and printers.
Although electronic waste constitutes only about 2 percent of the
typical municipal solid waste stream,
it nonetheless accounts for about
70 percent of the toxic waste found
in landfills, including cadmium,
lead and mercury, which can
contaminate soil and groundwater,
Furuyama added.
Companies and organizations can
schedule a pickup by calling 488-8870
or at www.ewastehawaii.com.
In 2012, the average weight of materials from a single business pickup was 844 pounds.
