1st Annual Movember Wet Dashe: Havin' Fun Doin' Good By Laurel Archer In the past, November has not been a month when outrigger racing events are held in Canada. It's off season, and cold, but with the first ever Wet Dashe being so memorable, there's no doubt this Movember event is here to stay! The Gorge Paddling Club of Victoria, BC hosted a 12-km dock change race - yes, a change race, but paddlers changed out on the dock - high and dry from the wintery Pacific Ocean. Fifteen crews of 9 to 12 paddlers, from juniors to mixed to all women, each paddled four 3-km loops of the Gorge to raise money for the Movember Canada and Vancouver Island Prostate Cancer Research foundations. The goal of the Movember Foundation: 'Havin' Fun Doin' Good' was epitomized in this event. On a pretty fine day for late November, all had fun and nearly $4000.00 was raised for men's health. Many paddlers sported moustaches, real and not-so-real, with a significant amount of faux facial hair being lost throughout the race! Tons of draw prizes were donated. A traditional shaving kit, the coveted big prize of the day, was won by Comox's Steve Butcher. He noted the irony of the fact that he couldn't grow a moustache if he tried! Special thanks to Corey Teramura and his team of volunteers from GPC's coached outrigger programs (rec, intermediate and competitive) for all of their work organizing and running the Wet Dashe. Also, thanks to Jennifer Loo and Fairway Markets for their support for this event.
