PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT HOKULEA update Hokulea celebrates 39 years of voyaging and prepares for her sail around the world. Kanehunamoku Voyaging Academy Kids learning the seafaring ways What are you going to be when you grow up? A few kids are already headed in a direction which interests them - being around the ocean. Kaneohe Bay is the setting for the Kanehunamoku Voyaging Academy (KVA), a program offered by Mana Maoli, a nonprofit 501(c)3 organization. The Kanehunamoku is a double hull canoe, a scaled down version of the Hokulea and serves as a floating classroom. It was built by Jay Dowsett and Jerry Ongies. KVA is a sailing program that teaches navigational skills, teamwork, and the cultural significance of the canoe in Hawaii. At KVA students learn the skills that may lead them into jobs right here in the islands: like being the captain of a Matson container ship; working for NOAH to protect the ocean's ecosystem; joining the Coast Guard or Navy; or becoming an experienced boat operator for the tourist industry or fisheries. The classes teach the basics of traditional navigation like the Hawaiian star compass, knots, songs and chants, sailing and seamanship. Students take that background and apply 21st Century know-how to be better prepared to land a job here in the islands. KVA is also available to families, school groups, classroom visits, sailing experiences and corporate team-building workshops. HONOLULU (March 6, 2014) - The Polynesian Voyaging Society (PVS) is celebrating two milestones this weekend: Hokulea's 39th birthday, and completion of the dry dock work for her upcoming voyage around the world. This Saturday, March 8, marks the day of Hokulea's first launch in 1975, when she left Kualoa, Oahu to sail to Tahiti. That launch was the cornerstone of reviving the ancient art of wayfinding in Hawaiʻi and Polynesia, and rebuilding a voyaging tradition that continues to grow today throughout the Pacific Ocean. On the eve of her birthday, Hokulea will return to sea after final dry dock preparations at the Marine Education and Training Center of Honolulu Community College. "Her re-launch on Friday is the culmination of six years of work," says PVS President Nainoa Thompson. Thompson says that thousands of community members came to METC to restore the canoes, and that in the end "it was the canoes that built a community." "We are grateful to the Marine Education and Training Center, the commitment of METC Director, Bob Perkins, and the aloha they have given these canoes," added Thompson. "The University of Hawaii system as a whole has been so extraordinarily supportive of our canoes, of the training of our crews, and the preparation for our voyage."
