Kanaka ikaika race #8 Scott Hawaii State Championships Kai Chong with his gold coin First to the Diamond Head Buoy, Kalei Kahookele hundreds turn out to race The Scott Hawaii Sate Championships was the 8th race in the Kanaka Ikaika Racing Series. The long course started at Makai Pier and the Short at Hawaii Kai. There were 100 in the long, 98 in the short. All converged on the Diamond Head Lighthouse buoy. From there the finish was Hydrating by the wall Lori Nakamura across the bay in front of Waikiki to Duke Kahanamoku Beach. The start of the Long Course ran between Manana Island (Rabbit Island) and the big black rock outcrop next to it called Kaohikaipu, which is a bird scantuary. Cutting this corner was risky and fortunately safety personal on jet skis guided paddlers away from the sudden impact zones. No running swells and the tide was headed in the wrong direction. If paddlers stayed close to the rocks, they could avoid the main current which in some places looked like a raging river. A few headed inside after Diamond Head and took advantage of some waves breaking sideways on the reef. Most took the direct, flat route. The last leg from Kaimana Beach to the finish was all about the paddler. After the race, it was also all about the paddler. Steve Scott was on hand to give out his gold coins, and Jim was on hand to award Maui Jim sunglasses to 'jan ken po' finalists. Food was on hand, cool Pacifico Beer, water and a treasure trove of giveaways, door prizes and raffles were flying out from under Jim's tent.
