I had been putting it there for years, but the download time was so long, I felt sorry for anyone having to wait the extra time to see it. What I didn't think about was that perhaps the paddler in Brazil didn't mind the wait. It's certainly a lot cheaper than the $45 yearly international subscription it would cost him. Well, not because of him, but because it's pretty hard making sure all 30,000 or so paddlers around the world get to see our magazine, I digitized it. (I'm just guessing at that number, it may be a lot higher.) Now, all a paddler needs is access to a web browser and they can read the magazine on their computer, iPhone or digital tablet, like the iPad. The new digital version has a lot of benefits over print: more content, more photos and live links to websites and YouTube videos. It looks just like the magazine, but with a twist, kind of like the Harry Potter movies where the tabloid pictures actually come to life. This is just the beginning of a new direction where magazines are headed. You're on vacation, say sitting on the beach on Morea in Tahiti, you have your iPhone (or similar device) with you, and you're looking at Pacific Paddler. As you flip through the pages, you see video clips and links to websites, blogs and sales-pitches tailored towards your interests. The printed copy will remain popular. There is no substitute to a pile of magazines at home that can be looked through without using an electronic device. As we become more dependant on technology, it may be a nice, quiet distraction to pick up a magazine and take it to the beach where you don't mind sand getting between the pages, and unlike a digital tablet, you can put the magazine over your face as you doze off to the sound of waves lapping the beach.
