Photos by Ropati Walter J. MacFarlane Regatta The 4th of July regatta at Waikiki Beach is always an anticipated event on the paddling calendar. The Walter MacFarlane Regatta has been hosted by Outrigger Canoe Club since 1943, making it the longest-running canoe race in Hawaii. This year lacked the big surfing waves of previous years, but for the spectators with their ama Kailua paddlers salute the 1,415 paddlers whose ages ranged from six, Hie Loui of Hui Nalu Canoe Club, to 81, Florence Apa from Anuenue (who took home a silver medallion in her Women Masters 65), the day was golden with a splash of 'red, white and blue'. Lanikai Canoe Club took advantage of every little wave that made it past the flotilla of 4th of July revilers and accumulated the top score of 102 points for the day. They also got to drink from the Walter MacFarlane Memorial Trophy which goes to the winners of the Senior men's race. Lanikai's women took their celebratory drink from the Muriel MacFarlane Flanders Cup. Rounding off the AAA Division, Outrigger racked up 72 points and Kailua 65. Winning the AA Division was Leeward Kai with 36 points followed by Healani 30, Keahiakahoe 26, and Hui Lanakila 25 points. The A Division was a slam dunk for the Waikiki Surf Club who surfed away to victory with 15 points. Keola O Ke Kai earned 7 points, Waimanalo 6, New Hope 5, Anuenue 4, Kai Oni 2 and Honolulu Pearl and Pu'uloa Outrigger both remained scoreless.
