wbb Waves, canoes, and paddlers unite The day had the right mix of sun and surf for the Waikiki Invitational Regatta. Perhaps the paddlers were expecting something a little bigger as the reef in front of Waikiki was closing out the day before. The course was challenging; there were waves to bust through, hulies, swamping, and errant canoes bumping and colliding with each other. No paddlers were hurt, but a few canoes were bruised. At the pre-race meeting, coaches were instructed to tell their steers-people to 'huli their 'Wa'a' if they anticipated running into another canoe. In 1979, the Waikiki Beach Boys started the Waikiki Invitational Regatta as an unofficial race during the Hui Wa’a regatta season and have had to cancel only a couple of years due to big surf. The clear winning club of the day was Na Keiki O Ka Mo'i who rallied 79 points. Waikiki Beach Boys racked up the second highest score with 44 points followed by Kaneohe and Lokahi tieing with 43 points. Manu O Ke Kai won the A Division with 37 points. The women's Senior race went to the Waikiki Beach Boys crew of Dana Gorecki, Andrea Messer, Jen Polcer, Kaui Pelekane, Lindsey Shank and Shien-Lu Stokesbary. Second place went to Lokahi and third Manu O Ke Kai. In the next race, the Manu O Ke Kai men's crew of Ben Wilkinson, Moku Sanborn, Glenn Williams, Robert Pactol, Paki Lagunte and Tim Vierra took it up two notches to win their Senior race.
