Gout is a form of inflammatory arthritis characterized by
the deposition of monosodium urate crystals in the joints,
tendons, and connective tissues. Uncontrolled gout (also
called refractory gout or recurrent gout) is marked by
serum uric acid levels that do not drop below 6 mg/dL
accompanied by recurrent flares and increased tophi.
Gout is associated with functional impairment and, for
many, a diminished health-related quality of life. Despite
