Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a highly prevalent,
contagious respiratory infection and a leading cause
of bronchitis and pneumonia. Although most cases
manifest clinically as mild to moderate upper respiratory
disease, severe sequelae can occur. RSV infections can
be dangerous for elderly and high-risk adults, leading
to complications such as pneumonia, worsening of
preexisting pulmonary conditions, and congestive heart
failure. In this activity, experts will examine the burden
of RSV infection in older adults, including risk factors for
severe disease. Faculty will review diagnostic challenges
and criteria for detecting RSV, as well as outline strategies
preventing RSV in older adults-highlighting recent
evidence for vaccines in late-stage development.

During this symposium, two experts-an endocrinologist
and an internist-propose ways that primary care physicians
can more efficiently meet the therapeutic needs of their
patients with both T2D and obesity. In particular, they
discuss the impact of glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor
agonists (GLP-1 RAs) on glycemic outcomes, the risk of
cardiovascular events, and body weight. After discussing
the rationale for targeting GLP-1 and GIP receptors
for glycemic control, the faculty focus on the clinical
significance of the weight reduction evidence for the
approved long-acting GLP-1 RAs, as well as an emerging
GIP/GLP-1 RA, in the treatment of patients with diabetes
and obesity. The experts will also converse with a patient
advocate on how shared decision making and nonjudgmental
communication increases patient satisfaction
and improves outcomes.
