ATS 2024 CONFERENCE NEWS
Four-Part Clinical Year in Review to Highlight Impactful
Papers in Global Lung Health and 15 Other Topics
O
ne of the most highly
anticipated offerings of
the ATS International
Conference, the Clinical
Year in Review, will be
presented in four sessions, one daily
from Sunday, May 19, to Wednesday,
May 22.
" The Clinical Year in Review is
an opportunity to get in touch with
state-of-the-art topics and evolving
ideas in pulmonary, critical care, and
sleep medicine, " explained Clinical
Year in Review Co-Chair Juliana C.
Ferreira, MD, PhD, ATSF, University
of São Paulo, Brazil. " Attendees will
be immersed in a carefully curated
review of the latest literature by
emerging leaders in
the field. After the
conference, participants
will have
a more profound
understanding of
innovative concepts
in each specific
area, enabling them
to integrate these
advancements into
patient care. "
Each session will feature four
speakers, each highlighting four to
six of the most relevant articles in
their respective fields of expertise
from the previous year, providing
attendees with a comprehensive
understanding of the latest, most
pertinent, and influential developments
in each of the 16 topics.
" We are thrilled to introduce
global lung health as a topic
in the Clinical Year in Review
for the first time this year.
Medicine is continually evolving,
and the scientific sessions at
the International Conference
endeavor to remain current,
offering attendees the latest
updates, " Dr. Ferreira said. " Certain
topics, like tuberculosis, have
seen significant clinical trial
advancements in the previous
year, and we aim to ensure that
attendees are informed about
these developments,
enabling them to
apply the latest
clinical evidence in
their practice when
they return home
from the conference. "
While the target

critical care, and sleep
medicine practitioners
- from trainees to
established clinicians in need of ongoing
medical education - the program
is also pertinent to researchers,
educators, and administrators.

Keynote Sessions Tackle Hot-Button Issues
for Respiratory Health Professionals
THE ATS 2024 INTERNATIONAL
Conference Keynote Series
focuses on timely, relevant topics
to the pulmonary, critical care,
and sleep medicine community
with engaging presentations
from leaders whose significant
contributions have impacted
the selected Keynote topics.
This year, the series will address
artificial intelligence (AI) in
medicine, the history of modern
mechanical ventilation, and care
for immigrant and undocumented
populations.
The Keynote Series will be held
from 8-8:45 a.m. PT daily, Sunday,
May 19, to Tuesday, May 21.
AI has rapidly become one of
the most discussed developing
technologies in recent memory.
Some of the most exciting
potential applications for AI could
significantly impact the tools and
methods providers and researchers
use to advance care for patients.
However, leveraging AI in medicine
is far from a risk-free proposition.
Two experts and a moderator
will lead this Keynote session to
provide a multi-faceted perspective
on AI in medicine and look ahead
toward future applications.
Another Keynote session will
trace the history of mechanical
ventilation in medicine. Only a few
years removed from the COVID-19
pandemic, providers are all too
aware that without mechanical
ventilation, the shocking death toll
from the disease would have been
significantly higher.
Author, critical care doctor, and
researcher Hannah Wunsch, MD,
MSc, chronicled the development of
mechanical ventilation techniques
in the autumn of 1952 during a
polio epidemic in her book,
The Autumn Ghost: How
the Battle Against a Polio
Epidemic Revolutionized
Modern Medical Care.
Capturing testimony
from doctors, nurses,
and patients, Dr.
Wunsch details the
dramatic true story
of the innovators who came
together in an overwhelmed

lives of many patients dying of
respiratory failure.
The final Keynote lecture will
cover patient care for immigrants
and undocumented people. A
diverse panel of experts will
summarize the current state of
care for these populations and the
best practices to provide optimal

considerations
for those seeking and
providing care.
