Tips for Early Career Professionals
Attending Their First ATS Conference
EARLY CAREER PROFESSIONALS
headed for ATS 2022 will have plenty
of tools and programs available
to help them get the most from the
International Conference.
The ATS invests in the next generation
of thoracic professionals
through
initiatives such
as the ATS
Early Career
Program,
which
includes invitation-only
courses,
such
as
the Student
Scholars
Program,
Resident Boot Camp,
Fellows Track Symposium,
and New Faculty Boot Camp, held
before the start of the International
Conference.
" Early and mid-career professionals
are vital to the growth of the
ATS and are the future of medicine, "
said ATS Senior Director of
Education Products and Programs
Lauren Lynch. " These courses educate,
prepare, and train our early
career professionals and demonstrate
the passion the medical educators
have for teaching this next
generation of learners. "
For those arriving at the convention
for the first time on Friday,
May 13, she recommends starting
with the " Road Map for Early Career
Professionals'' digital flipbook from
the Members In Transition and
Training Committee. It will highlight
all the major events, programs, and
activities of interest to medical
students, residents, fellows, post
docs, allied health care professionals,
and research professionals, as
well as any first-time conference
attendees. The book will be available
online closer to the start of
ATS 2022.
" The ATS International Conference
can be challenging to navigate, " Ms.
Lynch said. " This resource makes the
conference experience easier and
offers great tips. "
A tool that's great for networking
and should be a first stop for
early professionals is the Center
for Career Development, in
Moscone Center South. The MITT
Committee has organized a robust
schedule of career development
programs within this center,
including informal workshops that
offer valuable opportunities for
interacting with experts.
" This space was designed to be
a relaxing and energizing spot for
trainees to meet up, " Ms.
Lynch said.
Nineteen
Postgraduate
Courses are
offered
May 13-14,
covering
an array of
pulmonary,
critical care,
and sleep
medicine topics.
Each course is from
8 a.m.-4 p.m. PT.
Other highlights of
the conference targeted at young
professionals include:
Fellows Case Conference, 9:30-11
a.m. PT, Sunday, May 15 - featuring
fellows presenting six rare cases to
a panel of clinical, pathology, and
radiology experts in a traditional
Clinical Pathology Conference format.
The panel will discuss the key clinical
elements of the history of and a
differential diagnosis for each case,
as well as interpret the imaging and
pathology, then make a diagnosis.
Women's Forum, 11:45 a.m.-1:15 p.m.
PT, Monday, May 16 - recognizing
the achievements and supporting
the advancement of women in
thoracic medicine and research.
This year's speaker is Patricia Finn,
MD, an Earl M. Bane professor,
associate dean for strategic
initiative, head of the Department
of Medicine, and an associate
program director for the Medical
Scientist Training Program at the
University of Illinois at Chicago.
Networking Exchange, 5:30-6:30
p.m. PT, Saturday, May 14 - offering
an opportunity to meet peers, ATS
leaders, program directors, division
directors, and prominent thought
leaders. Cocktails and appetizers
will be served at this popular event.

Twitter feed (@atsearlycareer)
will keep young respiratory health
professionals updated on the latest
news while in San Francisco.
