Young Professionals Take Innovative Ideas to the BEAR Cage

DON'T MISS THIS YEAR'S BUILDING
Education to Advance Research (BEAR) Cage
competition, back for its eighth year, live
and in-person at the ATS 2022 International
Conference in San Francisco. The " Shark
Tank " -style live pitch session gives early career
professionals an opportunity to share their
research and innovative ideas with veterans of
translational science in the areas of academia,
industry, and government.
The ATS Drug Device Discovery and
Development Committee reviews all BEAR
Cage submissions, chooses three finalists,
and invites them to present and pitch their
ideas at the annual conference. Each finalist
will have 10 minutes to present their findings,
then the panel of judges will have 10 minutes
to query the finalist on their research. Finally,
the audience will have 10 minutes to ask the
presenter any questions about their project.
Once all finalists have presented, the panel
will award one grand prize winner $10,000 and
the two runner-up proposals $2,500 each.

Assembly Meetings Offer Introduction to ATS and Mentorship Opportunities
Each ATS member can join one

Membership Meetings
is one of the quickest,
most effective ways to
get acquainted with the ATS and
its Assemblies, all 14 of which will
be represented at the ATS 2022
International Conference.
Planning for conference
sessions begins at the Assembly
Membership Meetings, where
ideas are generated. These
meetings also serve as " premium
networking events, " according to
ATS Chief Executive Officer Karen J.
Collishaw, MPP, CAE.
" The Assemblies are the first
introduction to the Society
for many new members, " Ms.
Collishaw said. " It's where
collaboration begins. It's the first
step into getting involved either
in an early career professionals
working group or as a member
of a program or planning
committee. They are our treasured
grassroots. "
Each of the Assemblies focuses
on a select area of clinical or
research interest, but they all
have common goals: to improve
the collection, interpretation, and
dissemination of information; to
improve communication among
members; and to contribute to
International Conference planning.
They also create and update
ATS official documents.
Assembly Awards will be prePrimary
Assembly and up to two
Secondary Assemblies.

suggestions for future conferences.

committee chairs and members for
advice on such proposals increases
the chances of acceptance.

A meeting for each Section
takes place separately from the
Assembly meetings, during which
members can learn about new
opportunities for involvement and
plans for annual section activities.

Young professionals can also
meet their mentors through
the Assembly Membership
Meetings. Ms. Collishaw estimated
that, together, ATS Assemblies
match 200 to 300 early career
professionals with mentors
each year. Most of them go to
the ATS conferences and meet
face-to-face for the first time at
a designated Mentoring Meeting
Spot, she said.

" They discuss anything they
want, whether it be a proposal
they're working on or a grant
they're submitting, " Ms. Collishaw
said. " They also get suggestions
as to what sessions they should
attend. But mostly what happens
at the Mentoring Meeting Spot is
they get the opportunity to interact
with the legends in their field. "
This year, ATS Assemblies are
offering two new mentoring
programs, including mentors from
the Section on Medical Education
and from the Health Equality
and Diversity Committee's
underrepresented in medicine
program.
