DIVERSITY FORUM
Advocate for Health Equity
to Speak at ATS 2022
A
founding leader of the
Health Equity Subcommittee
within the ATS Health
Equity and Diversity
Committee is set to take the stage
at the ATS 2022 International
Conference in San Francisco.
Jesse Roman, MD, a member of
the ATS since 1988 and a Puerto
Rico native, will be the keynote
speaker at the Diversity Forum,
11:45 a.m.-1 p.m. PT on Sunday,
May 15.
The Health Equity and Diversity
Committee fosters diversity of the
workforce, monitors health equity
and diversity initiatives
throughout
the ATS, and leads
and encourages
projects, symposia,
and publications
related to lung
health in vulnerable
populations. It
raises awareness
about health equity
and diversity
issues through
the ATS International Conference
and publications while developing
mentoring programming for early
career professionals targeted at
those who are underrepresented
in medicine and science. The committee
also participates in quarterly
meetings with the International
Health Committee.
Dr. Roman is the Ludwig Kind
Jesse Roman, MD
Professor of Medicine, enterprise
division chief of pulmonary, allergy,
and critical care medicine, and director
of the Pulmonary and Critical
Care Medicine Fellowship Program
at Jefferson Health in Philadelphia.
He also serves as CEO of the Jane
& Leonard Korman Respiratory
Institute of Jefferson Health and
National Jewish Health, and was
recently elected treasurer of the
ATS, a position he will fill until 2025.
" The tradition has been that our
Diversity Forum speakers deliver
an inspirational message, often reflecting
on their careers and their
journey that has led them to where
they are currently, " said ATS Chief
Executive Officer Karen J. Collishaw,
MPP, CAE.
The push for greater diversity
across all fields of medicine has
intensified since the ATS conference
last took place in person in
2019, said ATS Membership Director
Jennifer Marotta Collin. The fields
of pulmonary,
critical care, and
sleep medicine and
research are no
different.
The Minority
Trainee Development
Scholarships
will be presented at
the Diversity Forum.
The MTDS, which
is celebrating its
20th anniversary,
is designed to increase representation
of underrepresented
minorities in thoracic medicine
and research by providing an
opportunity for minority trainees
to attend the ATS International
Conference. Applications are
scored on the quality of the
science, strength of the mentor
recommendation letter, the applicant's
leadership potential, and
their role in the abstract/project.
The Diversity Forum is organized
and presented by the ATS
Membership Committee and will
be hosted by its Chair Clement
Ren, MD, MBA, ATSF, and Vice
Chair Meshell Johnson, MD.
A $30 registration fee is
required to attend.
Former ATS President to Discuss
Juggling Work and Family at
Women's Forum
THE WOMEN'S FORUM AT THE
ATS 2022 International Conference
recognizes the achievements of
women in pulmonary, critical care,
and sleep medicine and research.
It is sure to be an
inspirational hub for
bonding and networking
this year as
well, especially since
it's been three years
since the last in-person
conference.
" It's usually standing
room only, " said
ATS Membership
Director Jennifer
Marotta Collin. " The
conversations afterward are the
best. The keynote is amazing, but
then the camaraderie at the tables
where colleagues connect and
discuss their challenges - everyone
leaves with a big smile on their face.
It's a really inspirational afternoon. "
This year's forum, from 11:45 a.m.Patricia
Finn, MD
1:15 p.m. PT on Monday, May 16, will
feature keynote speaker Patricia
Finn, MD, former president of the
ATS and past recipient
of the ATS Elizabeth
A. Rich Award,
announced at the
Women's Forum each
year.
Dr. Finn is an Earl M.
Bane professor, associate
dean for strategic
initiative, head
of the Department
of Medicine, and an
associate program
director for the Medical Scientist
Training Program at the University of
Illinois at Chicago.
As a physician scientist, she
focuses on the microbiome and
immune-mediated pulmonary
diseases, including sarcoidosis,
transplantation, lung injury, and
asthma.
Dr. Finn has also placed an emphasis
on fostering health equality in
respiratory diseases. She has spoken
extensively to the
media about growing
up poor and the inequities
in health care
it presented. She also
has discussed how
she has approached
exhaustion.
The 2022 Elizabeth
A. Rich Award will
be presented at the
Women's Forum.
It recognizes an
outstanding woman who has made
significant contributions in the fields
of pulmonary, critical care, and sleep
medicine. This year's honoree is
Patricia Sime, MD, FRCP, chair of the
Department of Internal Medicine at
Virginia Commonwealth University.
Nominees for the award are
judged on four equally weighted
criteria: contributions to the field,
leadership, mentorship, and ATS
service. Competition
for the award gets
stronger every year.
" It gets harder and

year, " Ms. Collin
said. " In past years,
there were maybe
five to choose from.
This year we had
about 38. "
The forum is organized
and presented
by the ATS Membership Committee,
Committee Chair Clement Ren, MD,
MBA, ATSF, and Vice Chair Meshell
Johnson, MD.
Registration and a fee of $30 are
required to attend the Women's
Forum.
