2024 SABCS Meeting Magazine - 18
The SABCS® CONTINUED FROM PAGE 17
The SABCS® hosted nearly 4,000
attendees in 2002, warranting a move to
the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center,
where the meeting has been held every
year since (excepting 2020 due to the
COVID-19 pandemic).
In the wake of Dr. McGuire's death, Dr.
Osborne took on a more prominent role with
the SABCS®. He and other Symposium leaders
recognized that the development of targeted
therapies and genomic medicines signaled the
breast cancer community would need to
increase its understanding of the molecular
pathways that drive breast cancer to
develop new treatment strategies. Dr.
Osborne soon contacted Margaret Foti,
PhD, MD (hc), chief executive officer
of the American Association for Cancer
Research (AACR), the first and largest cancer
research organization dedicated to accelerating
the conquest of cancer. This led to a joint
partnership in 2007, enhancing the Symposium with
greater scientific depth and breadth of outreach to other
scientific constituencies.
" AACR has enriched the meeting with the inclusion
of several sessions on basic science and by increasing
participation and attendance of basic and translational
scientists, laboratory-based graduate students, and
post-doctoral fellows, " explained Virginia Kaklamani,
MD, SABCS® co-director, professor of medicine at
UTHSCSA, and the leader of the breast cancer program
at the Mays Cancer Center. " This has helped bring
basic researchers and clinicians together to discuss
all aspects of breast cancer and find paths forward to
eventually find a cure for this disease. "
Since the initial SABCS® and AACR collaboration in
2007, the two organizations have only deepened their
connection and relationship to support breast cancer
researchers and spotlight key advancements in the field.
The AACR has managed the SABCS® press program
for many years. In 2023, the organization provided
18
Virginia Kaklamani, MD
enhanced innovations to the meeting's
logistics and operations.
The AACR also sponsors two featured
lectures and awards at the SABCS®
through the AACR Distinguished
Lectureship in Breast Cancer Research
and the AACR Outstanding Investigator
Award for Breast Cancer Research. The AACR
Distinguished Lectureship in Breast Cancer
Research award was established to recognize
outstanding science that has inspired, or has
the potential to inspire, new perspectives
on the etiology, diagnosis, treatment, or
prevention of breast cancer. The AACR
Outstanding Investigator Award for Breast
Cancer Research honors an investigator
whose novel and significant work has had
Carlos Arteaga, MD
or may have a far-reaching impact on the
etiology, detection, diagnosis, treatment, or
prevention of breast cancer.
The 2024 SABCS® will feature the latest
comprehensive breast cancer discoveries, investigating
basic science, prevention, diagnosis, translational
research, clinical research, survivorship, and end-oflife
care through a diverse array of general sessions,
plenary lectures, award lectures, special sessions,
educational sessions, workshops, debates, tumor
boards, and poster sessions.
As the small group of breast cancer specialists trudged
through a motel parking lot in 1978 in hopes of enhancing
their understanding of this deadly disease, they couldn't
have known the meeting they were attending would one
day become a vital source of advancement and optimism
for the breast cancer community and its patients.
As Carlos L. Arteaga, MD, SABCS® co-director and
director of the Harold C. Simmons Comprehensive
Cancer Center, explained, celebrating how far the
community has come is a vital aspect of the SABCS®. " At
the San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium®, we present,
debate, and discuss the issues impacting breast cancer
but also celebrate the progress made against it. "
