BURDEN, ECONOMIC IMPACT AND RESEARCH GAPS: KEY FINDINGS FROM THE PAN-EUROPEAN STUDY ON DIGESTIVE DISEASES AND CANCERS
Projecting Costs Until 2035
Analysis of a smaller subset of 24 countries was
performed to estimate future inpatient health
service delivery costs.
Due partially to the introduction of policies designed
to improve efficiency in health service delivery as
a whole and the development of more advanced
treatments and diagnostics that reduce length of
stay, a percentage decrease in inpatient health service
delivery costs is anticipated for 17 out of the 24
countries from 2021 to 2035.
However, this progress is not expected to be seen
evenly across Europe, with seven countries predicted
to experience a percentage change increase in costs,
including Ireland and Israel. Strategies to mitigate
these costs must, therefore, be investigated to tackle
widening disparities between countries relating to the
economic burden of digestive diseases.
It is important to note that these projections are
based on data up to 2019, and any changes that affect
inpatient service delivery will also affect the projected
estimates, such as the changes brought about by the
coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic.
These data can, therefore, serve as a baseline, and
as more data become available, an important area
for further research will be to investigate how the
pandemic has impacted these figures.
