BURDEN, ECONOMIC IMPACT AND RESEARCH GAPS: KEY FINDINGS FROM THE PAN-EUROPEAN STUDY ON DIGESTIVE DISEASES AND CANCERS
Analysis of the Burden and Economic Impact of Digestive Diseases
and Cancers and Investigation of Research Gaps and Priorities in the
Field of Digestive Health in the European Region
Digestive diseases and cancers exert a substantial
public health and economic burden across
Europe. Unfortunately, despite their significant
and increasing burden, they remain poorly
understood, attracting relatively little attention
in terms of policy, funding and research.
To gain greater clarity into the digestive health
landscape and build on the previous insights found
in UEG's first White Book, published in 2014, UEG
commissioned White Book 2 to evaluate the current
status of digestive diseases and cancers and
explore the unmet needs for research.
Findings from this new project, which looked at
a wide spectrum of digestive diseases, including
major diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, liver,
pancreas and biliary system, as well as digestive
cancers, reveal a notable and concerning increase
in the number of incident cases and deaths.
The findings also identify widening health
inequalities across Europe that are predicted to
be further exacerbated by emerging economic
challenges.
It is intended that the White Book 2 will assist UEG with accelerating
progress in reducing the burden of digestive diseases and cancers by
bringing greater public and political attention to this issue and helping
to identify priority areas where research and investment are required.
