Stomach cancer
For the 44 member countries combined, age-standardised incidence and mortality rates for
stomach cancer have decreased over time (Figure 122). From 2000-2019, age-standardised
incidence rates decreased by around 33% (17 to 11 per 100,000) and age-standardised
mortality rates decreased by around 40% (15 to 9 per 100,000). The total number of incident
cases and deaths in the member countries combined also decreased by around 9% (196,781
to 178,856) and 17% (172,720 to 144,121), respectively, from 2000-2019.
For the member countries combined, incidence rates increase steadily with age, peaking at
ages 85+ years for women and men (Figure 123). Age-specific incidence rates are higher for
men for most age groups. For both sexes combined, age-specific incidence rates have
decreased from 2000-2019 for all age groups.
Amongst the member countries in 2019, age-standardised incidence rates range from 3.5 to
14 and 5.6 to 31 per 100,000 for women and men, respectively, and age-standardised
mortality rates range from 2.9 to 15 and 4.6 to 32 per 100,000 for women and men,
respectively (Figure 124; Figure 125).
Age-standardised DALY rates for both sexes combined range from 73 to 502 per 100,000
among the member countries (Figure 126). Age-standardised DALY rates tend to be relatively
high amongst member countries within Western Asia and Central and Eastern Europe, whilst
some of the lowest rates occur among countries within the Nordic region. The vast majority
of the member countries (98%) have experienced a percentage change decrease in agestandardised
DALY rates from 2000-2019.
The proportion of stomach cancer age-standardised DALY rates attributable to smoking
ranges from 11% to 28% among the member countries (Figure 127). Member countries
within Northern Africa and the Nordic region have some of the lowest proportions of burden
attributable to smoking. Of the 44 countries, 12 (27%) have experienced percentage change
increases in the proportion of burden attributable to smoking from 2000-2019, including
several countries within Southeastern Europe. All member countries within the Nordic region
have experienced decreases in the proportion of burden attributable to smoking over time.
