BURDEN OF DIGESTIVE DISEASES
This section provides an international comparative analysis of the public health burden of
digestive diseases. We present GBD 2019 estimates of age-standardised incidence, prevalence
and mortality rates by sex, age-specific rates, age-standardised DALY rates and changes over
time for 44 UEG member countries, where data allow. We also examine proportions of agestandardised
DALY rates attributable to modifiable risk factors where available.
Cirrhosis and other chronic liver diseases
As defined within GBD 2019, cirrhosis and other chronic liver diseases are conditions in which
liver cells are destroyed and replaced by fibrosis.1 The definition includes a range of changes
to the liver including asymptomatic compensated cirrhosis, as well as decompensated
cirrhosis marked by profound symptoms and health loss.5 From 2000-2019, age-standardised
incidence rates have remained relatively stable (31 to 30 per 100,000) for the UEG member
countries combined, whilst age-standardised mortality rates have decreased by around 11%
(21 to 18 per 100,000) (Figure 11). These trends have contributed to an increase in agestandardised
prevalence rates from 2000-2019 of around 11% (17,330 to 19,218 per 100,000).
The total number of prevalent cases in the member countries combined has also increased by
around 29% (175,846,921 to 226,674,547) from 2000-2019.
