Description
The WHO estimates represent the average " hotel " component of
hospital costs, excluding the cost of drugs and diagnostic tests but
including personnel, capital and food costs.164 Inpatient service
delivery costs per hospital bed-day for primary, secondary and
tertiary hospitals in 2010 US dollars were averaged by country and
adjusted for inflation to produce costs in 2019 US dollars. Costs for
Czechia, Lithuania, Latvia and Montenegro were estimated from
costs in 2010 local currency units or international dollars.

An inpatient discharge is the release of a patient who was formally
admitted into a hospital for treatment and/or care and who stayed
for a minimum of one night. Includes emergency cases and urgent
admissions when they resulted in an overnight stay and formal
admission, and patients admitted as day-care patients but who
have been retained overnight due to complication. Annual data
were obtained from OECD for 27 countries, and Eurostat for the 6
remaining countries not covered by OECD.

Average length of stay is the number of bed-days divided by the
number of discharges during the year. The length of stay of a
patient should be counted as the date of discharge minus the date
of admission. Annual data were obtained from OECD for 27
countries, and Eurostat for the 6 remaining countries not covered
by OECD.
