Cirrhosis and other chronic liver diseases due to hepatitis B
For the 44 member countries combined, trends in age-standardised incidence, prevalence
and mortality rates for cirrhosis and other chronic liver diseases due to hepatitis B have
generally decreased over time (Figure 25). From 2000-2019, age-standardised incidence rates
decreased by around 33% (5.8 to 3.9 per 100,000), age-standardised mortality rates
decreased by around 37% (4.7 to 3 per 100,000) and age-standardised prevalence rates
decreased by around 29% (1689 to 1207 per 100,000). The total number of incident cases,
deaths and prevalent cases in the member countries combined have also decreased from
2000-2019, by around 23%, 19% and 16%, respectively.
For the member countries combined, prevalence rates are higher for men across all age
groups, and are highest amongst those of working age, peaking at age 30-44 years for men
and 30-34 years for women (Figure 26). For both sexes combined, age-specific prevalence
rates have notably decreased from 2000-2019 amongst those under 30 years of age.
Amongst the member countries in 2019, age-standardised incidence rates range from 0.6 to
14 and 1 to 17 per 100,000 for women and men, respectively (Figure 27). Age-standardised
mortality rates range from 0.1 to 29 and 0.3 to 36 per 100,000 for women and men,
respectively, and age-standardised prevalence rates range from 227 to 4370 and 340 to 4179
per 100,000 for women and men, respectively (Figure 28; Figure 29).
Age-standardised DALY rates for both sexes combined range from 7 to 632 per 100,000
among the member countries (Figure 30). Egypt and some countries within Central and
Eastern Europe and Western Asia have relatively high age-standardised DALY rates,
compared to countries within Western and Southern Europe. Of the 44 countries, only
Finland, Ukraine and the UK have experienced a percentage change increase in agestandardised
DALY rates from 2000-2019.
The proportion of age-standardised DALY rates attributable to alcohol and drug use ranges
from 3-80% and 0.3-17% respectively, among the member countries (Figure 31). The
proportion of burden attributable to alcohol use is generally lower amongst member
countries within Northern Africa and Western Asia. Countries within Western and Southern
Europe have some of the highest proportions of burden attributable to alcohol use, however
all countries within these regions have experienced decreases in the proportion of burden
attributable to alcohol use from 2000-2019. Of the 44 countries, 18 (41%) have experienced
an increase in the proportion of burden attributable to alcohol use, whilst almost all member
countries have experienced an increase in the proportion of burden attributable to drug use
from 2000-2019.
