In memoriam
Amid celebrating UEG's achievements and moments of
happiness over the past year, we had to announce the sad news
of the passing of a beloved and inspiring colleague and friend.
Peter Ferenci
Peter Ferenci was a role model for clinical investigators, a caring
physician, and a passionate academic teacher. He mentored and
inspired the career of numerous hepatologists in Austria and
around the globe. Peter's ground-breaking contributions to the
field of Hepatology mastering quite diverse research areas including
hepatic encephalopathy, viral hepatitis, and Wilson's disease
will always be remembered. In 2008, he received the EASL Recognition
Award as an appreciation for his outstanding achievements
and contributions to clinical research in Hepatology.
Peter furthermore left his mark in both European and International
Gastroenterology. He played an important part in the
organisation of the World Congress of Gastroenterology, held
in Vienna in 1998, and took active leadership roles in ASNEMGE
(Association des Sociétés Nationales Européennes et Mediterranéennes
de Gastroenterologie) and United European Gastroenterology's
Scientific Committee in the early 2000s, followed
by serving as chairman of UEGF in 2005. By understanding the
importance of a permanent secretariat for the success of the
society, Peter also played a key role in laying the foundation for
what is now UEG's Vienna-based Headquarters Management.
Apart from being a great scientist, master clinician, academic
teacher, and mentor, our community has also lost a wonderful
colleague and dear friend.
