UEG Year in Review 2023
Dear colleagues
and friends!
As we reflect on the field of digestive health during 2023, United
European Gastroenterology (UEG) proudly stands as the global
reference point for the digestive health community both in
Europe and beyond. UEG's dedication to advancing the prevention
and care of digestive diseases depends on its expansive
network-comprising over 50,000 professionals globally. UEG
serves as the hub for multidisciplinary gastroenterology, fostering
meaningful connections and offering access to invaluable
resources through the vibrant myUEG Community. From our
flagship event, UEG Week, to a range of educational experiences
and cutting-edge research support, UEG remains a driving force
in the GI community while fostering collaborations with patient
organisations.
Within the pages of the Year in Review 2023, you'll find a narrative
that showcases UEG's dedication to enhancing the well-being
of those specialising in the field of digestive diseases.
The year 2023 marked the end of President Helena Cortez-Pinto's
term at UEG and the beginning of Vice President Matthias Löhr's
term as UEG President. At UEG Week 2023 in Copenhagen, Helena
handed over the reins to Matthias at The UEG Night. Before
doing so, both Helena and Matthias took time in the UEG Week+
recording studio to reflect on the organisation's achievements
and discuss where UEG is heading in the years to come.
Helena shared her highlights of 2023 with us and what she would
like to communicate with the myUEG Community:
" We have been able to strengthen our community. Additionally,
we aimed to enhance our relationships with UEG's various committees
while preserving their independence in their respective
significant tasks. Overall, we have successfully attracted valuable
young individuals and talent, a development that brings me
particular satisfaction, especially evident at UEG Week. Furthermore,
we devised a system and structure supporting applications
for Horizon Europe, yielding positive outcomes, notably
with Matthias Löhr.
As my term draws to a close, what I will genuinely miss is the
positive atmosphere, relationships, and friendships that I have
forged and will continue to cultivate. I take great pride in having
served as a role model. In recent years, I have witnessed an increasing
number of women applying for various positions within
UEG and the GI community at large.
Ultimately, I've learned that unity begets strength. National and
specialist societies now view us as a community, a perspective
that proves beneficial for the GI field overall. They not only
participate in their specialised meetings but also engage in UEG
Week, charting a course aligned with their areas of interest. Both
avenues are available.
My advice to Matthias Löhr as he assumes the UEG Presidency
in 2024 is to persist in prioritising international outreach. We're
observing growing interest from diverse regions globally eager
to collaborate with UEG, providing ample opportunities for joint
activities and research projects.

Finally, I urge Matthias to continue efforts to enhance equity
and diversity at UEG. I am confident this will transpire, as he will
recognise how diversity augments the capacity and strength of
our myUEG Community. "
