Improving clinical practice to
reduce health inequalities across Europe
GI GUIDELINES APP: Streamlining Guideline Awareness and Adherence in Gastroenterology

INTRODUCTION
Gastrointestinal (GI) disorders pose a significant
health concern, affecting millions of individuals
worldwide each year. Staying up to date with the
latest multidisciplinary GI guidelines is crucial for
clinicians to provide optimal care. However, the
sheer volume of guidelines can make it challenging
to keep track of them. To address this issue, the
United European Gastroenterology (UEG) Quality of
Care (QOC) committee developed the GI Guidelines
app, aiming to provide easy access to high-quality
guidelines in an interactive way. A survey was
conducted between October 2022 and January 2023
to assess clinicians' awareness of available guidelines
and the usefulness of the app.
RESULTS
A total of 1377 complete surveys were analyzed,
with
respondents
representing
diverse

The app was developed with input from eminent
members of UEG affiliated International Societies.
The survey gathered information on users' familiarity
with guidelines, adherence to them in clinical
practice, app usage, and usability. The survey was
distributed through the app and other channels.
demographics. Among app users, 71% reported
using the GI Guidelines app during daily clinical
practice. The app helped increase awareness of
specific guidelines, as 11% of users were not familiar
with any of the included guidelines. Most
respondents reported following guidelines in their
clinical practice, although the response " rarely " was
common for some guidelines.
CONCLUSION
The GI Guidelines app, with over 25,000 downloads
and a wide range of interactive tools and guidelines,
has proven to be a valuable resource for clinicians.
The survey results highlighted its positive impact on
guideline awareness and adherence. The app's
features, such as interactive algorithms and
recommendation summaries,
were
highly
appreciated by users. The UEG and the UEG Quality
of Care committee will continue updating the app,
incorporating user feedback, and ensuring clinicians
have easy access to high-quality resources for
improved clinical practice.

UEG currently supports the development of 14 initiatives
in
total which will all be published in UEG Journal and integrated
into the GI Guidelines App upon completion.

GI Guidelines App
The GI Guidelines App introduces unprecedented capabilities,
offering enhanced functionality and consolidating an extensive
array of resources in a single, accessible platform. This app encompasses
guidelines across diverse areas, including endoscopy,
hepato-biliary, neurogastroenterology, oesophagus, paediatrics,
pancreas, nutrition, surgery, and more.
