In 2023, the Public Affairs Group (PAG) experienced a successful
year marked by influential activities that shaped policy developments
and heightened interest and awareness of digestive health
at both national and EU levels.
UEG at the European Parliament
On April 26, 2023, we officially launched our latest publication,
the key findings of the White Book 2, at the European Parliament
in Brussels. The event " Bridging the gaps: A pan-European study
on digestive diseases across Europe " brought together digestive
health experts, representatives from the European Parliament, the
European Commission, WHO Europe and the Patient organisation
Digestive Cancers Europe (DiCE) for a lively and solution-oriented
discussion on the current state of digestive health across Europe.
Following the event, an op-ed article was published by Euractiv.
In addition, we issued an Open letter to the EU leadership
with key policy recommendations based on the White Book 2
findings.
Meeting with Members of the European Parliament
In Brussels, the UEG delegation also met with individual Members
of the European Parliament (MEPs) to present key data from
White Book 2. We were pleased to deepen our relations within
the European Parliament and gain new support for the MEP
Digestive Health Group.

Digestive Health Month
In May, as part of our primary public awareness campaign, we
delved into the socio-economic burden of digestive diseases
and addressed existing research gaps. Raanan Shamir, a UEG
Research Committee Member and ESPGHAN Representative,
underscored the significance of early childhood health promotion
in an article
published by EMJ, aligning with the official
theme of World Digestive Health Day for the year: " Your Digestive
Health: A Healthy Gut From the Start " .
