Each year, we provide a comprehensive selection of awards,
fellowships, and prizes to contribute to the personal and professional
development of trainees and established gastroenterologists
and hepatologists.
UEG Research Prize
UEG awards € 100,000 each year for excellence in basic science,
translational or clinical research. With this prize we support a
future scientific research project from early stage to successful
conclusion. The prize addresses well-established researchers at
the height of their active career, whose science has had or will
have a crucial impact on digestive health.
Michael Bretthauer, a distinguished Professor of Medicine at
the University of Oslo and Gastroenterologist at Oslo University
Hospital, was awarded the UEG Research Prize in 2023. His work
predominantly centres on gastrointestinal endoscopy, particularly
colonoscopy, colorectal cancer, and polyps. He is a lead
investigator in international clinical trials, such as the Nordic-European
Initiative on Colorectal Cancer and the European Polyp
Surveillance trials. With over 300 scientific articles, his current
H-index is 52. Alongside his wife, Mette Kalager, he co-founded

the Clinical Effectiveness Group, conducting trials and epidemiological
studies in gastroenterology across Scandinavia and
Europe, with over 400,000 enrolled patients.

UEG Lifetime Achievement Award
Jan Tack received the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2023. Jan
Tack, Chief of Gastroenterology at Leuven University Hospitals,
is a distinguished figure in the field. He established the Translational
Research Centre for Gastrointestinal Disorders (TARGID), a
globally recognised research hub.
His expertise lies in Neurogastroenterology and Motility, covering
gastrointestinal disorders, the enteric nervous system, and hormonal
control of satiation. With an H-index of 103, he's authored
900+ articles with 46,000+ citations and mentored 45+ PhD
fellows and 20 postdocs, many of whom are now professors.
His leadership extends to the Rome Foundation and EAGEN. He
has won awards in gastrointestinal research and was editor of
