Accelerating Our Impact
through Philanthropy
Ed Walter
ULI Global Chief Executive Officer
We often talk about
how our mission-shape
the future of the built
environment for transformative
impact in communities
worldwide-is
at the heart of everything
we do as an Institute.
However, we have spoken
less about the role the
ULI Foundation plays in
securing and managing
the funds necessary to
deliver this work.
While membership and event fees fund
the benefits we provide to our members, it
is the philanthropic support generated by
the ULI Foundation that enables us to tackle
the challenges our industry and communities
face.
As is the case for many of ULI's most
successful ventures, the idea for the ULI
Foundation came from our members. In
1970, 17 leading members each donated
$50,000 to create the Foundation. Over the
following 50 years, more than $135 million
was raised to support ULI's mission-focused
activities. This year alone, ULI will receive
more than $10 million from the Foundation
to support efforts in housing, sustainability,
health, education, advisory services, and
diversity, equity, and inclusion. In addition
to raising the funds critical to strengthening
and expanding these programs, the
ULI Foundation acts as a focal point for our
mission impact, bringing together members'
time and talent to deliver lasting change in
communities.
As successful as the ULI Foundation has
been, we have seen a step change in our
fundraising efforts over the past year. We
received the largest single gift in ULI history
with a $10 million donation from Randall
Lewis. Randall has been a supporter and
funder of ULI's work on building healthy
places for many years, but his latest gift will
16
URBAN LAND SPRING 2022
focus on the interconnected areas related to
sustainability. As part of this gift, we have
renamed the sustainability center as the ULI
Randall Lewis Center for Sustainability in
Real Estate. In an interview starting on page
41 of this issue, Randall explains the motivation
behind this generous donation and
what he hopes it will achieve.
While an eight-figure donation is certainly
a landmark in ULI's history, it is by
no means the only sizable gift we have
received. Two past ULI global chairs and a
past ULI Foundation chair have established
the ULI Chair's Fund, which will provide
undesignated funds for ULI to invest. To
start the fund, the Klingbeil Foundation has
agreed to provide a gift of $7 million, and
Tom Toomey and Doug Abbey have agreed
to make gifts of $5 million each.
These gifts build on the strong support
we have received in the past for our housing
initiatives, including Ron Terwilliger's
gift to establish the ULI Terwilliger Center for
Housing and Preston Butcher's $2 million
gift to study rental housing.
Other ULI leaders are also supporting
our mission efforts. Former ULI global chair
Owen Thomas donated $1 million to establish
the Net Zero Imperative to focus on the
Institute's decarbonization efforts, a gift that
was more than matched by a combination
of former ULI global chair Lynn Thurber, Joe
Azrack, Franz Colloredo-Mansfeld, and Dan
Cashdan. Our education efforts have benefited
from a $1 million gift from Bruce Etkin
to create the ULI Etkins Scholars Program,
as well as gifts of $250,000 or more from
Patrick Phillips, Ron Nahas, Tyler Higgins,
Stephen Conley, Mike Van Konynenburg,
and Geoff Stack to support University Connections
and UrbanPlan.
We have also secured funding from
third-party foundations. In addition to
active grants from the Kresge Foundation,
Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, and JPB
Foundation, we have secured $500,000
