ULI Convenes
Attainable Housing
Crisis Roundtable
Global governing trustees
subgroup on attainable
housing brings together
the best thinking from
around the world on how
to make homes available
to moderate-income
households and first-time
buyers.
The shortage of housing that
moderate- and lower-income
households and first-time buyers
can afford is an increasingly dire
problem, not just in the United
States but in Europe and Asia
as well. In response, ULI has
designated improving housing
attainability across the world as
one of the organization's three
global priorities.
A subgroup of ULI's global governing
trustees has been working
on finding ways for the Institute
to help communities meet the
challenge. Some of the subgroup
members recently gathered online
for a Zoom roundtable discussion
on the attainable housing shortage
and potential solutions.
Participants included W. Edward
Walter, ULI global chief executive
officer; Faron A. Hill, chair of the
ULI Foundation and president of
real estate finance and advisory
firm Peregrine Oak in Atlanta; Khoo
Teng Chye, chair of ULI Asia Pacific
and a Practice professor at the
College of Design and Engineering
member at National University of
Singapore; Kavindi Wickremage, a
managing director at Bain Capital
Real Estate in Boston; and Anne
Kavanagh, chief investment officer
and board member of real estate
investment firm PATRIZIA AG in
London. Also participating were
Christopher Ptomey, executive
director of the ULI Terwilliger Center
for Housing, and Billy Grayson,
executive vice president of ULI centers
and initiatives and leader of
ULI's sustainability initiatives.
An edited version of their discussion
follows.
Why has housing production
and attainability become a
top priority for ULI members,
and how would you describe
the extent and urgency of the
challenge? What are the social
costs of this problem?
W. Edward Walter: The cost of
housing is a driver of where people
want to go, and increasingly where
