change, which Lewis sees as " an
existential threat to all of us. "
One issue that particularly concerns
Lewis is resilience. As climate
change accelerates, " what will
happen to all of the people who
live in fire zones and hurricane
zones? " he asks. He sees ULI's
efforts to help communities find
ways to mitigate the impacts of
global warming as important to providing
a more secure future.
Another factor that motivates
Lewis to contribute financially to
ULI is the opportunity to affect
issues on a global scale. One
strength of ULI, he notes, is its
diverse membership-developers,
architects, engineers, and bankers
worldwide-who can leverage their
expertise to attack problems from
multiple angles.
Lewis intends for his $10 million
gift to amplify ULI's efforts to
create solutions for the industry
as it evolves to cope with climate
change. He urges other potential
donors to ULI to respond to that
urgency and become engaged.

talking about this problem, " he
says. " So you have to see that your
investment in ULI is potentially
going to help many millions of
people. It's about how we're going
to survive in the future. If you join
in the effort, you'll see there's a
personal satisfaction from this-a
feeling that you're really making a
difference. "

Sustainability in 2022
Real estate industry experts anticipate
a growing acceptance of, and
scope of responsibility for, the race
to net zero in 2022, according to a
new report from the ULI Greenprint
Center for Building Performance,
produced in collaboration with
Ferguson Partners, a global talent
management boutique.
In order to accelerate decarbonization
and create a more
sustainable future for the built environment,
there is a need for unified
leadership and a holistic approach
driven by a long-term strategy,

aggressive capital management,
and agility to adapt to climate
change, the report says.
ULI Global Sustainability Outlook
2022 addresses many of the challenges
in the market and raises
some of the issues that require
more industry leadership and
collaboration amid the growing
climate crisis. An annual publication
launched in 2021, the report is
a vehicle for the Institute to share
insights from member experts on
the key environmental, social, and
governance (ESG) issues that will
influence strategic decision-making
each coming year.

industry is evolving and advancing

faster than ever before, " says Marta
Schantz, senior vice president of
the ULI Greenprint Center for Building
Performance.

as a ULI global governing trustee
and member of the ULI Americas

The second annual Sustainability
Outlook is based on interviews
with members of the ULI Americas
Sustainable Development Council,
the ULI Europe Sustainability
Council, and the ULI Asia Pacific
Resilient Cities Council, who were
asked which sustainability topics
and issues are on the rise, why
they matter, and what the industry
should do about them.
The ULI Global Sustainability
Outlook 2022 report is available on
