ULI-Where the Future Is Built
Ed Walter
ULI Global Chief Executive Officer
The recently concluded
Spring Meeting, held in
San Diego in April, and
the Europe Conference,
held in Brussels in May,
heralded what I hope will
be the beginning of the
new normal. Attendance
in San Diego exceeded
4,000, making that meeting
one of the largest
spring events in our history.
The conference in
Brussels welcomed more
than 700 attendees, exceeding the registrations
from our most recent in-person event.
Though concerns regarding the next variant
of COVID-19 are still on people's minds, it is
also clear that those in our industry are eager
to reengage with one another and confront
the many challenges and opportunities that
lie ahead.
ULI is well positioned to lead the industry
not only in addressing the challenges
related to sustainability, housing affordability,
real estate education, and improving
diversity, equity, and inclusion in our
industry and our communities, but also in
identifying forward-looking opportunities
and trends. Our teams, our members, and
our philanthropic supporters are collectively
aligned to seek solutions to these pressing
issues and then ensure that these best
practices are widely disseminated and
employed and impacts measured. As we
look forward to FY 2023, making progress
on these critical issues will be a central
focus of ULI's efforts. A few highlights of
ULI's work are:
The generous gift received earlier this year
from Randall Lewis allows us to continue
groundbreaking research and creation of
practical toolkits to help our members
accelerate their progress, cost-effectively,
toward net zero carbon buildings. The
gift also supports our continued research
and introduction of practical tools to
help our members build healthier, more

resilient, and more equitable buildings and
communities.
The gift from Owen Thomas that launched
the ULI Net Zero Imperative, as well as gifts
from the other members who have joined
him, has allowed us to build a groundbreaking
program of tools and technical
assistance that is helping accelerate decarbonization
in global cities.
The sustained growth of the ULI Greenprint
program-now with 70-plus member
companies representing over $1.4 trillion in
assets under management-complements
this research and technical assistance and
brings with it global sustainability leaders
who are helping expand, amplify, and
accelerate the work of the ULI Randall Lewis
Center for Sustainability in Real Estate.
The ULI Terwilliger Center for Housing will
significantly accelerate its technical assistance
activities designed to improve housing
attainability in communities throughout
the world and complete annual Home
Attainability Indexes for both the Americas
and Asia Pacific that illustrate the magnitude
of the housing challenge in those
regions. These efforts are designed to help
communities better understand the scale of
the housing shortage they may face and the
extent to which a particular housing market
provides a range of attainable housing
choices to the regional workforce, as well
as identify workable solutions to address
the problem.
ULI Learning seeks to educate the next
generation of diverse real estate leaders
through a combination of a comprehensive
real estate curriculum and partnerships with
colleges and universities and other industry
organizations. In addition to further expanding
its professional development curriculum
beyond its current 40 courses and four
certificates, ULI Learning in FY23 will expand
its partnerships with the Real Estate Executive
Council and Nareit/Fannie Mae to offer
its signature course-Foundations of Real
Estate (FoRE)-to a diverse population of
students, with the goal of attracting them
