Located on the Bordeaux riverfront,
MÉCA unites three regional arts agencies-
FRAC
for contemporary art; ALCA for cinema,
literature, and audiovisuals; and OARA for
performing arts-and incorporates a unique
outdoor urban room to create a dynamic
public space.
The project has transformed the derelict
embankment of the Quai de la Paludate,
acting as a catalyst for the neighborhood
and beyond. The integration of MÉCA is a
true success offering vast and welcoming
indoor and outdoor public space. There is
public access to a vast lobby that includes a
welcoming forum, a 9,150-square-foot (850
sq m) fifth-floor terrace that offers a stunning
view of the Garonne and beyond, a 56-seat
restaurant, and a 10,800-square-foot (1,000
sq m) multipurpose room.
The building is bright and inviting, offering
views of the artistic activities inside to the
public. The outdoor ramps form a loop from
the street to the riverside, giving pedestrians
a unique experience. The building is covered

with specially made concrete panels that
look like the white limestone of Bordeaux
and work as a thermal mass limiting the
energy needed for heating and cooling. The
entire development implements many environmental
strategies, including LED lighting
on motion detectors, ecologically responsible
isolation materials, cooling management,
low-impact construction using prefabricated
materials, and connection to a local heating
network.
The overall cost of €60 million (US$60.5
million) is an impressive achievement considering
the quality of the building and the specific
features required, such as the volumes
and heights for performance and exhibit
spaces, acoustics, and fire protection for
the artwork.
The jury praised MÉCA for transforming
underused and derelict land into an indoor
and outdoor vibrant cultural hub that supports
professional artists while engaging the
public through interdisciplinary artistic partnerships
and innovative, cost-effective, and
sustainable design solutions.
