markets. The council is also partnering
with San Francisco's Office of Housing
and Community Development on the Bay
Area Developers of Color Fellowship to
equip participants to navigate the city's
affordable housing development process.
ULI Minnesota recently partnered
with the Itasca Project, a group of leaders
from the business, philanthropic,
and public sectors, to better assess and
develop strategies to meet the region's
housing needs. A regional work group
meets virtually every other month to
connect policymakers at the state and
municipal level and share best practices;
a recent session focused on downpayment
assistance, particularly for firsttime
homebuyers of color. The council's
2021 report Missing Housing for Middle
Incomes: Strategies to Reduce Cost and
Add Affordability outlines opportunities to
increase housing production for middleincome
households.
The housing production shortfall has
been accumulating over decades. As a
development-focused institution, ULI has
thousands of members who know how to
put product on the ground. We have the
power to engage with our communities,
participate in attainable housing conversations
and opportunities at the district
and national council levels, and advocate
for more innovation and knowledge
sharing between the public and private
sectors. I'm asking all ULI members to
leverage their influence and help break
down the barriers to increased housing
production.
In closing, I'd like to acknowledge
Peter Ballon, global head of real estate
for CPP Investments, for his outstanding
member leadership as ULI's global chair
(2021-2023), a role in which he championed
the Institute's then-new mission
priorities of affordable housing, decarbonization,
and education. Peter has
been a strong supporter of a more global
ULI and in February delivered remarks at
ULI's first India Summit, officially launching
ULI in India. Come join your ULI colleagues

to help celebrate Peter's leadership and
welcome the new ULI global chair, Diane
Hoskins, co-CEO of Gensler. Diane is the
right person at the right time to help
position ULI as the leader for our mission
