AND THE ULI FOUNDATION
The Urban Land Institute is a nonprofit education
and research organization that was founded in
1936. Its mission is to shape the future of the
built environment for transformative impact in
communities worldwide.

ULI Global Chief Executive Officer
Over the past nine
months, I've traveled
the ULI ecosystem
from the Americas
to Europe and Asia,
engaging with members
and listening to
their perspectives on
opportunities for further
positive evolution.
Members are excited
about ULI's mission
priorities of education,
decarbonization, and
housing equity. Three themes resonate:
community, knowledge sharing, and
impact-themes that differentiate ULI.
In the Americas, ULI has a wellearned
reputation as an independent,
objective, and nonpartisan thought
leader and problem solver. Community
is activated in the Americas through
district councils, product councils, and
a variety of governing bodies and
platforms. Our record-breaking Spring
Meeting in Toronto attracted over
4,800 participants.
So much of ULI's impact occurs on
the ground. Early visits with ULI Los
Angeles, ULI San Francisco, and ULI
Orange County/Inland Empire provided
strong member insight into the unique
real estate and community opportunities
in California. A ULI San Francisco-
led Advisory Services panel focused
on the multifaceted pandemic- and
socioeconomic-engendered challenges
facing cities today. Valuable insights on
sustainability, housing equity, and building
inclusive community were captured
and will be shared across ULI.
District council innovation was front
and center during a visit with ULI Indiana.
A groundbreaking Advisory Services
panel in Fort Wayne addressed
the need for a more diverse supply

chain for the transformation of an old
GE manufacturing site into a vibrant
mixed-use center. Meanwhile, ULI Indiana's
Real Estate Diversity Initiative
(REDI) was in full swing in Indianapolis.
A diverse group of early-career individuals
was participating in a blend of
classroom training, experiential learning,
and networking with local real estate
leaders. This innovative program was
started in ULI Colorado.
ULI Europe has become a formidable
community of over 5,000 members.
National councils have gained
traction, the ULI Europe Conference in
Madrid attracted over 700 participants,
and leading research is driving impact,
most notably in efforts to stimulate a
more sustainable real estate industry. In
late 2021, ULI Europe introduced the C
Change program, which has pioneered
research on the impact of transitional
climate risks on property valuations.
At ULI Asia Pacific, much is in
motion. A February visit to New Delhi
and Mumbai enabled participation in
the launch of ULI India. A group of
exceptional founding members, sponsor
companies, and roughly 100 new ULI
India members shared knowledge from
across that country. Terrific collaboration
is opening the door to ULI impact
in rapidly growing and urbanizing markets
like India.
Across Asia, national councils are
creating community, sharing knowledge,
and driving impact in Japan, South
Korea, China, the Philippines, and all the
way south to Australia. The Asia Pacific
Housing Attainability Index, launched
during the ULI Asia Pacific Summit in
Singapore, garnered front-page media
attention. Housing attainment is truly a
global challenge and opportunity.

on closing the housing gap in America
