this project incorporates the
restoration and modernization of an
historical market building which was
originally constructed in 1914 in the
heart of Porto. In 2013, the market,
one of the most emblematic of the
city, was declared Monument of Public
Interest recognizing the patrimonial
value of two inseparable dimensions:
the singularity of the Beaux Arts
building and its function as a traditional
market.
Current Porto Mayor, Rui Moreira,
elected in 2014, envisioned a
refurbishment that would guard the
essence of the market, the sellers,
and its charm while bringing it up to
speed with contemporary concepts. He
entrusted the project to Go Porto, a
municipal project management entity
and to the architectural studio of Nuno
Valentim. Nuno, the architect in charge,
stressed that the renovation project
was based on three priorities: " the
building, the market and the people. "
The new building opened in 2022.
Maintaining the façade and structure,
the infrastructure of the building was
completely modernized, including
an efficient supply and distribution
underground tunnel and loading bay
for trucks, the diversion of the stream
and a direct access to the metro
that enabled them to pedestrianize
some of the surrounding streets.
The architect strived to salvage and
enhance the essence and spirit of the
market.
Original tilework, window
frames, statues and curtains from the
old building were restored and reused.
Most of the materials used were of
local provenance.
The architect aimed to stay true
to the original design and the strong
social approach resulted in 70 sellers,
from the original 90, returning in
2018 and the decision to maintain old
rents, enabling them to remain in their
" home " . 90 percent of the sales are still
made to locals (restaurants and people)
and footfall has increased seven-fold.
Porto's iconic Mercado do Bolhão (Bolhão market) was reopened
in 2023 after a rehabilitation by architect Nuno Valentim.
