A Successful First Half
of the Year
Ed Walter
ULI Global Chief Executive Officer
As we reach the midpoint
of 2021, it is worth
taking the time to reflect
on the significant things
our committed members
and staff team have
achieved, despite the
challenges of the COVID19
pandemic, and to look
ahead to what we have
planned for the second
half of the year.
The first six months of
the calendar year have
seen our members continue to connect virtually-often
in record numbers-to share
ideas, experiences, and best practices. The
ULI Europe Conference in February attracted
over 1,200 registrants, which is nearly double
the number of attendees that we have previously
attracted for the in-person event. The
conference once again showed how online
formats enable us to reach new audiences
that would not typically be able to attend and
demonstrates why virtual programming will
have a future at our major events even when
the pandemic is over. The Terwilliger Center's
Virtual Housing Opportunity Conference
enjoyed similar record success, attracting
more than 700 participants, and included the
launch of the 2021 Home Attainability Index,
which is set to be an invaluable resource as
we continue to tackle the issue of housing
affordability.
More recently, the Virtual Spring Meeting
attracted over 4,300 attendees, mirroring
the level of participation of past in-person
events, and once again combined content
sessions with keynote speakers and industry
leaders, networking, product council meetings,
and virtual tours of real estate projects.
Nearly 900 attendees also tuned in to the
ULI Asia Pacific Summit, which, in a sign of
things to come, combined a virtual experience
with an in-person event in Tokyo for
Japan-based members. We expect to see
16
URBAN LAND SUMMER 20 21
more hybrid virtual and face-to-face events in
the months ahead, and we are now planning
our Fall Meeting in Chicago in October, which
we expect will be largely an in-person event,
supplemented with digital elements.
In addition to a very successful meeting
program, the first half of the year saw the
unveiling of our new mission statement:
Shape the future of the built environment
for transformative impact in communities
worldwide. The statement is supported by
three commitments that can be remembered
easily: Connect, Inspire, Lead. These commitments
expand on the Institute's objectives
and explain how we deliver on our mission.
We will be building on this momentum in
the second half of the year as we focus our
efforts on defining our mission priorities. Our
aim is to establish three key issues that we
will concentrate on as an organization over
the next three years. These priorities will help
us deliver the mission by focusing our collective
efforts on tackling a few well-defined
real estate challenges where we can make a
significant and measurable difference. Our
mission priorities will influence the programs
we deliver, the events we organize, the content
we produce, and who we partner with
and raise funds from.
The second half of the year also brings a
number of scheduled leadership changes at
ULI. From July 1, the position of global chairman
transitions from Owen Thomas, CEO of
Boston Properties, to Peter Ballon, global
head of real estate at CPP Investments. We
are very grateful for everything Owen has
done for ULI-not only over his two-year term,
but also over the 30 years he has been a
member. He will continue his active engagement
with the Institute into the future and
has endowed ULI with a generous $1 million
donation to enable us to step up our work
on the issue of decarbonization in the real
estate industry. I am delighted to welcome
Peter to the role of global chair for the next
two years. He has been working closely with
