Beyond Arrivals and Departures
Most of the world's great cities originated
as seaports: Venice, Istanbul, Lisbon, Alexandria, and
Guangzhou are just a few examples. In this age of
jet travel, major airports are evolving as those great
cities did long ago, developing into inland ports with a
similar complexity of uses and economic importance.
Logistics centers, of course, continue to thrive around
airports, especially as the shift to online ordering has
gained speed. But the often-vast tracts of land surrounding
airport operations are being developed for
new, sometimes quite unexpected uses.
Within or connected to airports themselves, there
are theaters, shopping malls, restaurants, and stylish
hotels-even indoor parks with spectacular waterfalls,
as seen in the image from Jewel Changi Airport in Singapore
that graces the cover of this issue. The potential
seems unlimited, with developments including housing,
medical facilities, and even a horse-racing track.
This issue explores some of the most complex of those
new hubs. In " The Airport-Centric Future Takes Flight, "
which begins on page 50, we see some of the leaders,
including projects around Orlando International Airport;
Amsterdam Airport Schiphol; Incheon International Airport
in South Korea; Dulles International Airport outside
Washington, D.C.; Denver International Airport; Dallas
Fort Worth International Airport; Hartsfield-Jackson
Atlanta International Airport; and Edmonton International
Airport in Canada.
Our architecture-focused UL 10 package, which
begins on page 38, spotlights some of the best new
airport facility designs from around the world. It features
examples from airports serving Austin, Texas;
Guelmim, Morocco; San Francisco; Singapore; New
Orleans; Lapu-Lapu City, Philippines; Montreal, Quebec;
Nelson, New Zealand; Gardermoen, Norway; and Salt
Lake City, Utah.
This issue also presents snapshots of all finalists in
this year's ULI Global Awards for Excellence program.
Each of ULI's three regions-Americas, Asia Pacific,
and Europe-conducted its own Awards for Excellence
program. Asia Pacific winners were the first to
be announced; the other two regions' winners will be
selected over the summer. All the winners become contenders
for the Global Awards program, and those winners
will be presented in the Fall issue of Urban Land.
This issue also marks a departure-it is the last one
I am directing as editor in chief. It has been my great
honor and privilege to guide this magazine for the past
10 years. It allowed me to work with best-in-class colleagues
and the world's leading land use professionals.
The topics we've covered-smart responses to global
warming, the challenges of increasing equity and diversity
throughout the land use industry and society, and
efforts to help more people attain high-quality housing,
to name a few-are some of the most important facing
our society, and I have been fortunate to explore them
with you. The magazine carries on, with great work yet
to come. Look for an outstanding Fall issue to arrive in
mailboxes in September, and on our e-reader accessible
through Knowledge Finder, knowledge.uli.org.
