Street Life Rethink the Road As cities consider federal infrastructure investment in light of climate change and pandemic-inspired innovations, place-making solutions offer an opportunity to leverage more value from the public right-of-way. In Houston, Texas, SWA transformed an eight-lane speed zone in front of the city's convention center into a pedestrian-friendly setting for programmed and recreational activities, art, dining, and entertainment. Six vehicular traffic lanes were removed, retaining limited through-access, with reclaimed road redesigned as a multi-dimensional public outdoor space. Increased tree canopy was introduced to reduce urban heat island effect. The project is recognized as a 2018 ULI Houston Development of Distinction.
