Montrose is surrounded by opportunities to explore some of the most beautiful countryside in the West. Middle Fork Trail Located in the Cimarron Mountains, this trail is a beautiful valley floor hike that follows the Middle Fork of the Cimarron River. Gaze in awe at the magnificent cliffs of Precipice Peak above, and the beautiful river meandering along the valley floor below. Hikes along this easy trail can be scaled anywhere from three to ten miles in length according to your stamina and schedule. Chukar Trail Deep in the canyons of the Gunnison Gorge National Conservation Area lies Chukar Trail, a moderate one-mile trail that leads to the Gunnison River at the bottom of the Black Canyon. Allow about two hours to drive there and one to two hours to hike it. 4WD vehicles are recommended for the access road. Alpine Trail This is another outstanding hike in the Cimarron Range.
