Start at the south end of Fort Pierce and explore the quaint community of White City. Visitors can step back in
time in this peaceful and rural setting to soak in the 'old Florida' feel that is rare to find today. Continue north
to the Village of Lincoln Park that carries a rich history of famous African American artists. Home to a heritage
trail honoring the Florida Highwaymen - a group of 26 nationally known African American folk artists as well
as a second heritage trail tracing the steps of renowned author Zora Neale Hurston who lived in Fort Pierce
and is now laid to rest here. Along the way, don't forget to stop in the Peacock Arts District to observe the
colorful public art and the wild peacocks that are found roaming the streets and becoming the latest odd, yet
intriguing unofficial tourist attraction.
Finally, you can't really experience Fort Pierce without visiting its historic downtown situated on the
picturesque waterfront of the Indian River Lagoon. Downtown Fort Pierce is a destination in itself, offering
visitors many opportunities for shopping, dining, great fishing and a range of entertainment and activities
from farmers markets to festivals and so much more. The main street of downtown has been voted as the Most
Idyllic and Historic Main Street & No. 1 Best Small Town Main Street in America.
