In legislative corridors, cooperatives work for their members
T
he Virginia and Maryland General
Assembly sessions ended in early
spring after completing their
legislative business. Both states navigated
the ever-changing dynamics of COVID-19
restrictions, while simultaneously navigating
ever-changing political headwinds.
In Virginia, legislators in the House of Delegates and
state Senate debated thousands of bills, shepherding a few
through the maze of divided government. A Democratic
majority in the Senate and a new Republican majority in the
House of Delegates debated a wide range of issues, including
environmental policy, funding for teacher salaries and school
construction, workforce development and more.
In Virginia, your cooperatives were successful in supporting
legislation that would enable greater local control over
expanding access to renewable energy options. A bipartisan
bill on solar energy from Sen. Lynwood Lewis and Del.
Chris Head passed with universal support. It enables locally
owned electric cooperatives to voluntarily increase access
to net metering and power purchase agreements for solar.
The bill also ensures that third-party solar companies pay
their fair share to use member-owned infrastructure.
Virginia's electric cooperatives were pleased to work
with a diverse group of stakeholders on this legislation.
By leveraging partnerships in the renewable energy industry,
the agricultural industry and the environmental advocacy
community, cooperatives were able to bring forward a
compromise legislative solution to meeting the renewable
energy needs of their members.
Cooperation Among Cooperatives is one of the key
principles that drives our legislative efforts as member-owned
electric cooperatives. With this principle in mind, Virginia,
Maryland and Delaware cooperatives continue to invest
in relationships with each other and key stakeholders to
bring innovative legislative solutions to meet our memberconsumers'
needs.
With the 2022 legislative session behind us, your
cooperative is already looking to the future t fi nd new and
innovative ways to bring all member-consumers the most
reliable and affordable services.
