Protect Your Hearing
D

five adults in

the U.S. has some
degree of hearing
loss? Defined as a
sudden or gradual
decrease in how well
one is able to hear,
this continues to be
one of our nation's
major public health
issues. The most
common causes are
exposure to noise and
aging, since there is a strong relationship between one's age and reported hearing loss.
As we live our lives we are exposed to vast amounts of sounds at all different levels. Noisy occupations
including TVs, radios
and MP3 players, and
reduce the number
of noisy appliances
running at the
same time.

working in a noisy industry much less hazardous, provided correct ear protection is worn. Nowadays, loud
recreational music is the main reason hearing loss is increasingly affecting younger people. Sounds that
exceed 85 decibels are usually considered harmful. What many may not realize is that loud music can
easily exceed 100 decibels.
WHILE REGULAR EXPOSURE TO LOUD NOISE CAN DO IRREVERSIBLE DAMAGE TO OUR
HEARING, FOLLOWING THESE SIMPLE PRECAUTIONS WILL PROTECT THE HEARING WE
STILL HAVE, PREVENTING POSSIBLE DAMAGE OR FURTHER DAMAGE:
* Turn down loud appliances,
including TVs, radios and MP3
players, and reduce the number
of noisy appliances running at the
same time.
