THE INSIDE STORY
Though born and
Bill Sherrod
reared in suburban
Richmond, I have a
great love of rural
Virginia. In nearly 14
years as a newspaperman
in rural Southside
and Central
Virginia, I developed a deep appreciation
for rural living and the people
who give rural communities their
character.
Sheila Jones, the subject of this
issue's cover story, is a good example
of the type of person who makes the
quality of life in a rural community
what it is. Sheila's a resident of Charlotte
County. Her home is near the
tiny hamlet of Phenix, and she works
in Brookneal, a small town south and
a little east of Lynchburg.
When her mom passed away in
1997 from breast cancer, Sheila became
a crusader of sorts in the war
against this disease. She became involved
in Relay For Life, work that
has become a major focus of her life.
The Truckers' Parade Against Cancer,
which Sheila helped organize and promotes
on an ongoing basis, has developed
into a huge fundraiser for the
American Cancer Society in a small,
rural Virginia county.
For her work, she was awarded the
Good Samaritan Award by the Electric
Cooperatives of Virginia, Maryland
and Delaware, a richly deserved accolade.
We join in saluting Sheila and
her TPAC team's work, and wish them
continued success in their efforts to
fund the search for a cure for cancer.
After the July issue came out, I was
reminded - once again - how
closely folks read Cooperative Living.
On the table of contents page, in the
brief preview text about our GOOD
NEIGHBORS story, I reversed the
names of the kidney donor (Janet
Doughty) and the kidney recipient
(Susan Smith).
As soon as the issue began circulating,
we began getting calls, emails,
and other contacts about the error, reassuring
us that folks do, indeed, read
the details of the table of contents, and
our readers have good eyes!
My humble apologies for the error;
and to our readers who contacted us
about it, thanks for the (always goodnatured)
corrections. We like knowing
you pay close attention to what we
