RESPECT YOUR ELDERS
Survival in the wild often depends on the older generation passing
on important knowledge to the younger generation. This is especially
evident in elephant herds with older matriarchs (dominant females) that
recognize signs of danger.
Even though you are growing up in an age of technology, there is
still much wisdom to gain from those folks who have lived more years
on the planet than you.
Spend time with a " senior. " Ask questions. Seek advice. Discover
his/her wealth of experience and information.
DON'T NEGLECT YOUR FRIENDS
Scientists have discovered that
horses, elephants, dolphins, and even
bats seem to have " besties " within
their group.
Treat your friends with kindness
and fairness. The special bond that
you share means that you can count
on them to be there when the good
times aren't.
TRUST YOUR INSTINCTS
Animals are naturally attentive to each of their senses. They listen to
their instincts and respond according to what's happening around
them.
People, however, often miss the signs or warnings that indicate that
a situation could become risky or unsafe.
Learn to follow your feelings. If something doesn't seem right, listen
to that little voice in your head that is alerting you to react. Put your natural
survival skills into action and stay safe.
As you move forward through the next nine months, remember to act
on the lessons learned from these natural teachers. Enjoy your journey
from the first day to the last day.

Our June KIDS' KORNER Super Sleuth
Challenge encouraged readers to notice the
remarkable ways that many different types of
animals are able to hide in plain sight. From
those with protective or disruptive coloration, to
those who are masters of disguise and mimicry,
this ability helps them keep on doing what it
takes to stay alive for another day.
For a chance to win $25, entrants were challenged
to find a clue in the magazine showing a
shy, secretive bird that is more often heard than
seen. The loud, guttural call of the males have
earned it the nickname " thunder pumper " or
" water belcher, " and youthful entrants were
asked to provide both the page in the magazine
where they found the clue, along with the name
of this type of bird. The
correct answers were
" page 30 " and " American
Bittern. " Lucas Reed was
our $25 winner.
