READER'S GRANDFATHER
STACKED ARMS AT APPOMATTOX
Richard Johnstone's March/April
VIEWPOINT column, " An Awed
Stillness, " was so moving and meaningful
to me and I wanted to share the
reasons why.
My paternal grandfather, William
David Shaw, was a member of
Company K 1st North Carolina
Regiment and was one of four men
from his unit to stack the arms at
Appomattox at the surrender. Among
the things discovered in a trunk from
my late parents was a faded document
handwritten on lined notebook paper
that listed the names of those in the
above regiment " of the late War. " On
the back of page 2 was this handwritten
notation:
" 1st and 3rd NC Regiments and
3 Virginia Regiments made the last
charge at Appomattox and captured
a Battery and drove the enemy Back.
Company K of the 1st Reg. had but
four men to stack arms William
Branch, Benjamin Short, William D.
Shaw, John Winters. "
Several years ago on the Fourth of
July, my husband Paul and I went to
the National D-Day
Memorial in Bedford and
left there and stopped
at Appomattox Court
House where we
toured the grounds
and attended a film
presentation. I was given
a copy of the page with my
grandfather's name on it as one of
the soldiers " paroled. " It was very
moving to listen to a park representative
describe how the men
marched down the path and
stacked the arms, knowing that my
grandfather had been one of them.
My father, Bennie Jackson Shaw,

born on May 8, 1901, was the
seventh and youngest child of
William David Shaw. I have
enjoyed researching family history
and trying to leave a story behind
for our children, grandchildren,
and great-grandchildren.
Thank you to Mr. Johnstone for
sharing his thoughts and insights
through such a well-written article.
