Culpeper-area volunteers offer unique
service to Virginia's large-animal owners
W
ho would you call if your horse
fell into an ice-filled pond or got
stuck in a muddy swamp?
How about if you discovered that your
neighbor's cattle had escaped their pasture
and fallen into your swimming pool?
After responding to several such
challenges, members of the Little Fork
Volunteer Fire & Rescue Company in
Rixeyville decided to launch their
Technical Large Animal Rescue Team
in 2010.
Fire Chief Doug Monaco explains,
" Several of us had attended a basic
awareness course taught by industry
expert Dr. Rebecca Gimenez of Technical
Large Animal Emergency Rescue, Inc.
(TLAER). This organization provides
training worldwide to emergency
responders, animal control officers,
veterinarians, rescue organizations, largeanimal
transporters and owners on the
techniques, methodologies and tactics
needed to safely extract livestock trapped
in precarious situations. "
Inspired by this first class, 11 Little Fork
volunteers completed additional training
at the M.A.R.E. Center in Middleburg to
become TLAER technicians, as well as
gaining their EMT, firefighter and Incident
Command System (ICS) certifications.
Next, Little Fork used donations and an
ASPCA grant to purchase a trailer and
specialized equipment such as a Becker
sling, rescue glide and rescue harness.
" After passing out fliers and promoting
our free service at local horse events, we
received our first rescue call in 2011, " said
Chief Monaco.
In the years since, Little Fork has
expanded its operations to serve the entire
Commonwealth, while remaining the
state's only all-volunteer technical largeanimal
rescue team.
" We are dispatched automatically for
large-animal extrications in Culpeper,
Fauquier, Orange, Rappahannock, Stafford
and Prince William counties, " said Chief
Monaco, adding that team members have
traveled up to four hours to assist with
emergencies in other areas of the
Commonwealth.
One of Little Fork's recent rescues was
also one of their most unique. Last
October, the team was called to Botetourt
County to extricate a horse from a hayloft.
Chief Monaco explained, " The owner's
new mare had gotten in a tussle with her
older horse Phoenix, who broke down a
barrier as he fled and escaped by heading
