Take a few precautionary steps to fight the bite
W
ith much of the Commonwealth of Virginia receiving near-record levels of rainfall this spring, insect-borne diseases are
becoming more of a risk than in drier years.
The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) reports that since 2004, at least nine diseases related to mosquitoes, ticks and
fleas have been discovered or introduced into the U.S. The number of reported cases of 16 different insect-borne illnesses has also
tripled in the past decade: 27,000 were reported nationwide in 2004, but that rose to 96,000 by 2016.
Especially for those living in rural areas and near livestock that may potentially become infected, the Virginia Department of
Game and Inland Fisheries offers these tips for controlling mosquito and tick populations and protecting yourself and your family
against bites that may lead to insect-borne illness:
* When possible, stay indoors during the times of day when
mosquitoes are biting.

Limit exposure by keeping grass and vegetation around your house
well-trimmed. If you aren't able to avoid walking through tall grass or
underneath a tree canopy, wear long, loose and light-colored clothing,
tucking pants legs into socks and boots.
To repel ticks as well as most insects, use a repellent containing
diethyltoluamide, known as " DEET. " Developed by the U.S. Army in
1946 to protect soldiers in insect-infected areas, DEET is safe and
effective for both adults and children when applied following the
directions on the label.

Because standing water provides a breeding ground for many species,
conduct regular patrols around your property to locate and empty
pockets of water found in common, manmade items such as buckets,
open garbage cans and more. Turn over or remove containers where
water collects, such as old tires, potted plant trays, buckets and toys,
and eliminate any standing water. Use gravel or dirt to fill in puddles,
where possible.

Clean out birdbaths and wading pools once a week, and make sure
gutters and downspout screens are clear.
Add insect traps and perhaps an electric " bug zapper " around your
yard to further help reduce insect populations.
