erhaps you're planning to build a new deck to
enjoy cool autumn evenings or a perimeter fence
around your property. If any of your fall projects
require digging, whether for updating your landscaping
or setting posts, remember to first dial the " Miss Utility "
service at 811 at least three days before you'd like to
begin work.
Although most people who tackle do-it-yourself
projects are aware of the free " Call Before You Dig "
service, a national survey by the Common Ground
Alliance (CGA), a federally mandated group of
underground utility and damage prevention
professionals, showed that only about 50 percent of
homeowners actually follow through and make the call.
CGA data also shows that somewhere in the U.S.,
an underground line is damaged an average of every
six minutes because someone decided to dig without
first dialing 811. To increase awareness, CGA is leading
the effort to observe National 811 Day each year on
Aug. 11. Promoting National 811 day reminds
professional excavators as well as homeowners of the
importance of always calling 811 before digging.
Underground-utility infrastructure, including buried
gas, water, phone and electric lines, can be just an augur
turn or shovel thrust away from transforming a project
into a disaster. Even simple tasks such as installing a
new mailbox can damage underground lines and disrupt
service to an entire neighborhood! Not only could the
diggers and others be harmed, but disregarding use of
the 811 service can also potentially result in fines and
repair costs.
Play it safe by dialing 811 to find out exactly where
these utility lines cross your property. Tell the operator
where and when you're planning to dig and what type
of work you'll be doing. They'll provide you a job
number and notify affected local utilities.
Within a few days, a technician will arrive to locate
and mark the approximate paths of underground pipes,
cables and wires with flags or paint. Should the locator
be delayed, Miss Utility will notify you and provide an
