CALLING ALL
The answer is Y-E-S; research shows that spelling skills are closely linked to
those of reading, writing and comprehension. Standardized spelling keeps the
relationship between sounds and letters meaningful and helps students become
confident communicators. Accurate spelling is a
powerful learning tool, plain and simple.
As you progress through higher grades, there will be
many more reports and essays to write. Spelling will
count! Later, there will be college and job applications,
scholarship forms and resumés to fill out ... spelling
will really count then! When you know how to assemble
words correctly from their letters, it will reflect favorably
on your overall knowledge and your attention to detail.
It just makes good sense to keep following the rules of
standard written English and establish a good spelling
habit early on.
Almost certainly you will be eating out in the open
air several times during the summer ... maybe at a huge family reunion at the
park with tons of relatives and tons of food. Or perhaps you'll be on a blanket
at the beach enjoying a small family picnic from a basket.
Picnics come in all sizes. As long as the meal happens in the great outdoors,
it doesn't matter what or where you eat. So, why not grab a sandwich and
drink, head out the door to a shady spot, and make your own private picnic
happen in your own backyard! (And you might want to take that library book
along that you've been meaning to finish ... outdoor book time is the best.) n
