events that took place
during the dizzying,
eventful summer of
1969: the Woodstock
music festival, Hurricane
Camille and the Apollo
11 moon landing. It's also
a nod to our July 1994
issue, when we covered the same sensational
events with a cover image design that would
have once been considered " far out. "
But if we're talking about " far out " events,
the Apollo 11 mission really brought new
meaning to the popular '60s expression. It
also resonates with me, as I met Edwin " Buzz "
Aldrin in 1989 while he was on a press tour
celebrating its 20th anniversary.
I was a budding journalist, there to interview
him for the Kids Connection. The enormity
of interviewing the famous astronaut wasn't
lost on me. He was the second human to press
his bootprint into lunar soil and gaze upon
the moon's barren horizon. I remember
getting goosebumps at the mere thought of
being 240,000 miles away and seeing our
luminous blue planet juxtaposed against the
infinite blackness of space.
I was going to meet the man whose eyes
were awestruck by this incredible sight.
Despite having walked on the moon, Buzz
was surprisingly down to earth. I absorbed
his every word with rapt fascination. He
talked about the thrill of doing something that
no man had done before, and how moved he
was when the astronauts touched down safely
on the moon. He described the fragility, the
perfection of planet Earth set in a seemingly
desolate universe. " It was incredible, " I
remember him saying with a twinkle in his eye.
I was in the presence of a man who had been
a part of something really great. The world
watched with bated breath as he triumphantly
planted the American flag on the moon's
surface, proving that anything is possible.
In our cover story, Robert Nock, Phillip
Payne and Charlie Finley each share their
personal recollections of the three memorable
events that summer which affected the nation,
world and mankind. From our vantage point
50 years later, we can see the enduring
significance of those events as they continue
to resonate in our social and cultural memory.
As you peruse this issue, we sure hope
you " dig it. " 

September to bring electricity to villages that subsist without power. It's part of United
We Light: Project Bolivia and the embodiment of the seventh cooperative principle,
Concern for Community.

It's been 50 years since Americans cheered The Eagle's landing on the moon's surface,
were awed by the music and mayhem of Woodstock, and watched in horror as Camille
tore its way from Louisiana to Virginia. From our vantage point 50 years later, we can
see the enduring significance of those three events that took place during the memorable

30 Crossroads
Incorporated in 1818, Scottsville is full of small-town charm and
a distinctive sense of community. The low-lying town offers
historic architecture, a thriving small business community and
access to plenty of James River-centered activities. The town's
mills, warehouses and canals also played a crucial role in the
Civil War. Locals say it's a great place to live and work.
