he Inn at Herrington Harbour was built in the
1950s with a hat tip to the big band swing era.
It accommodated visitors arriving on steamships
from nearby cities. While it is only about an hour
southeast of Washington, D.C., it is worlds away in
atmosphere and ambiance.
WHAT IT'S ABOUT: Herrington Harbour is known for
its north and south boat slips on the Chesapeake Bay,
but add the amenities of an inn and you have a true
marina resort. The architecture has been preserved to
reflect what devotees refer to as a time of " graceful
living. " It's eco-friendly and was named as Maryland's
first Green Lodging Travel Partner.
WHY IT'S GREAT: There's something for everyone at the
Inn. If you enjoy landscaping, you'll appreciate a stroll
through the gardens to get to your room. You can take
a dip in an Olympic-sized swimming pool or hit the
private beach with kayaks and paddleboards. The Inn
features a 2-mile-long hiking trial and offers charter
cruises and fishing adventures from the harbour.
HOW TO VISIT: Take I-95 North to I-495 East. Exit at
Maryland Route 4 to Route 260. A left on Route 261
takes you to the Inn. Or avoid D.C. traffic by taking
U.S. 301 to Route 4.

ol. Charles Lewis lives on nearly 250 years after
his death at the Battle of Point Pleasant, which
predates the Revolutionary War battles of
Lexington and Concord. His 3,200-acre settlement
in Bath County, owned by the Cowden family since
1959, is the basis for Fort Lewis Lodge & Farm, which
combines a country inn and working farm in a
picturesque Blue Ridge setting.
WHAT IT'S ABOUT: A variety of accommodations awaits
visitors, including bedrooms in the main lodge, three
bedrooms in-the-round in an attached glazed-tile silo and
carefully reconstructed log cabins from North Carolina.
Larger groups might check out the Bend House, which sits
on a premier 165-acre tract adjoining Fort Lewis and
features 360-degree mountain views.
WHY IT'S GREAT: How can you beat 3 miles of private
river access and a multitude of trails for biking and
hiking? One new addition - a wood-fired sauna, located
on a treehouse-style deck. As the Lodge's Erin Cowden
put it: " After you sweat, you are just steps away from a
cleansing dive into the cool, clear waters of the Cowpasture
River. " The venerable farm is expanding, with more than
100 head of cattle, a new vegetable garden, two pigs,
chickens and, most recently, three new baby goats.
HOW TO VISIT: From the north, take U.S. 250 West
in Staunton. Follow Route 629 South to Route 678
in Fort Lewis. Turn left on Route 625 and left on
Old Plantation Way. From the south, take I-64 West
at Lexington. Follow Route 780 North to Route 39
West, then right on Route 625 and right on Old
Plantation Way.
